Local wildlife

The rooster lives freely in the wild in Polynesia and is part of local folklore. In the Walt Disney film "Moana," it played an important role as the character "Hei Hei." Particularly in Moorea, you will inevitably hear its morning crow and even at other times of the day, creating a bucolic atmosphere. You might even spot one passing nearby, at which point you can admire the shimmering colors of its feathers and its proud bearing.

Moorea owes its name to the yellow lizard, the island's emblem, Moo, meaning "yellow lizard." You will have the opportunity to see two species: the yellow lizard, primarily active at night because it lacks pigment, and the other species, green in color, which is active during the day. It boasts a magnificent green coat with a few red spots clustered on its back. Neither species poses any danger.
